WILMINGTON — The president of an insurance agency part of the statewide movement to bring more charter schools to North Carolina was sworn in to the UNCW board of trustees last week.

Steve Griffin was appointed by the North Carolina General Assembly Speaker of the House Tim Moore to a four-year term on the governing body. He joins other July trustee additions Traci Butler, senior vice president for LabCorp Diagnostics’ South Atlantic division, and Dr. Aldona Woś, a retired internal medicine and pulmonary medicine physician.
After graduation from UNCW in 1982, Griffin became and independent insurance agent in 1985 and now owns the company Insurance People, one of the largest writers of private and charter schools in the Southeast.
Griffin’s experience in the education sphere include a stint as North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics trustee from 2013 to 2021. He was also chair of the North Carolina Education and Workforce Innovation Commission, which grants over $2 million annually to fund innovative vocational programs.
The school choice advocate will serve on the external affairs and educational planning and programs committees.
Griffin has also held many boards and nonprofits across the state.
Currently, he is a board of directors member of the Homebuilder’s Association of Durham, Orange and Chatham counties, a post held since the late 1980s. Griffin is also a member of the Governmental Affairs Committees of the Independent Insurance Agents of NC, the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association and the Friends of Durham Steering Committee.
The insurance agent was previously a founding board member of the Lincoln Community Health Center Foundation and served on the boards of the Durham Jaycees and Reality Ministries. Also on his resume is a past vice chair and board member of the Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network Board (known today as Families Moving Forward), which serves homeless families and underprivileged children.
Griffin’s first meeting as a board member will take place on Oct. 12.
