BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Renovations are slated to begin next month on a rest stop in Brunswick County.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a $981,000 contract to Maxton, N.C.-based Kowen General Contractors earlier this month to upgrade the Shallotte facility.

Located along U.S. 17, the rest area will close while under construction, which could begin as early as mid-October. It will likely remain closed through spring 2024.

Renovations include a new family restroom and water line, as well as updated drainage and landscaping. The Visitor Center originally opened in 1990 and accommodates 33 cars, seven spots for trailers and eight trucks.
