Brunswick Schools employee charged with sexual exploitation of a minor

LELAND — An employee with Brunswick County Schools has been charged with nearly a dozen felonies related to crimes against a minor.

David Andrew Smith, 50, was arrested around 12:50 p.m. Friday at his home on Coral Stone Court. He has been charged with one count of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and nine counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Smith works in Brunswick County Schools IT department; the school system is working with Leland Police Department on the case. According to officials, it is not yet known whether any students have been affected.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected. Smith is being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
