WILMINGTON — Police have released the names of two gang members arrested following two shooting incidents, one involving a Wilmington police detective who reportedly fired his weapon during a traffic stop after one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a gun.
Deshaun Montell Clarida, 21, and Deshon Katkai Rucker, 19, are each facing charges in connection with a shooting in the area of 23rd and Chestnut streets at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.
A detective responding to the shooting conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and found Clarida and Rucker inside, Lindsay said. Rucker allegedly pulled out a gun and the detective drew his weapon and opened fire. No one was injured.
The suspect reportedly ran to the Creekwood Public Housing Community, where he barricaded himself inside a home. Clarida, who was a passenger in the suspect vehicle, was arrested at the scene of the traffic stop, Lindsay said.
A standoff with police in the Creekwood Community ended after about 10 minutes, when Rucker came out of the home and surrendered peacefully, Lindsay said. Three New Hanover County Schools were placed under a shelter in place during the incident.
Clarida was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked at the New Hanover County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
Rucker faces charges of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, attempted breaking or entering, larceny after breaking or entering and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked in jail under a $1 million secured bond.
