Renovations to the boathouse, wooden walkway and dock at Greenfield Lake are now complete.
According to the City of Wilmington, work started in January and was expected to take three months but finished ahead of schedule. The $440,000 project was funded through the city’s capital improvement projects budget.
The project included replacement of the old bulkhead, which dated back to the 1970s. The wooden walkway and paddleboat docks were also replaced. Ramps and handrails have been added to the new walkway and docks to make them handicap-accessible. Instead of being anchored to the bottom of the lake, the new docks float so it’s easier for people to get in and out of boats.
Two new handicap-accessible fishing areas were added, and the boardwalk near the boathouse was also elevated as part of overall safety improvements.
The boathouse was closed during construction but reopened on Monday, according to Cape Fear River Watch, the organization that operates the facility. Boats are available for rent from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week except Tuesdays. For more information on boating activities on Greenfield Lake, visit their website.
