No one was injured Monday afternoon when a poultry truck caught fire on U.S. 74-76 in Brunswick County.
Fire crews responded to a tractor-trailer that caught fire on U.S. 74-76 in Leland about a mile from the Columbus County line at about 2:20 p.m., according to Brunswick County Emergency Services Deputy Director Scott Garner.
The truck driver reported that he smelled something while driving and pulled over in a nearby field, Garner said. The tractor-trailer, which was carrying frozen chicken, caught fire and the fire spread into nearby woods.
Eastbound traffic on U.S. 74-76 was closed while crews battled the fire. Fire crews cleared the scene at about 5 p.m. Monday.
The tractor was destroyed and the trailer suffered some damage, Garner said. The N.C. Forestry Service also responded to the fire.
