A trial date has been set in the case of a Wilmington man charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 32-year-old man in January–the first homicide reported in 2014.

Shelby Lentz, 19, was indicted by a New Hanover County grand jury on March 10, charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Martin John Yakimovich II, who died from multiple stab wounds during a fight at a home at 318 McRae St. on Jan. 3.

According to court records, his trial date is scheduled for Sept. 2 in New Hanover County Superior Court.

In an incident report released by New Hanover County Emergency Services, a witness administering first aid to Yakimovich told dispatchers he had been stabbed in the stomach. The report also indicated the stabbing occurred during a fight between Yakimovich and Lentz, who was Yakimovich’s fiance’s roommate.

Lentz has been convicted of 19 misdemeanors, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections. He also faces several drug charges including possession of ecstasy, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia in New Hanover County Superior Court.

According to New Hanover County jail records, Lentz also served a 20 day sentence on a shoplifting charge, which began on April 10. He remains in jail under a 503,000 secured bond.

Assistant District Attorney Barrett Temple is the prosecutor in the case. Paul Mediratta is representing Lentz.
