Construction of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail along South 17th Street has been extended to include a new drainage element.
Crews are adding a pipe under nearby Waltmoor Road to relieve flooding known to that area during rainfalls.
“Combining the construction of the trail with the additional drainage improvements and repaving 17th Street and Waltmoor will allow the city to complete the work with the least amount of disruption to citizens,” said a press release from the city Friday.
The leg of the trail in question is 1.3 miles from Wade Park along Bethel Road, Waltmoor and 17th to John D. Barry Drive, where it will connect with an existing part of the trail.
The city expects paving 17th Street and the trail segment between John D. Barry and College Road “within the next few weeks.”
The far right northbound lane there would be closed each day, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the city said.
It’s a $2.1 million project whose bill is shared between the federal and state transportation departments, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Carolina, the city’s 2006 parks bond and its five-year infrastructure improvement plan.
Work began in December 2013 and could complete by year’s end.
