According to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley, the following incidents were reported March 14-16:
- Officers responded to Empie Park near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Park Avenue in reference to an armed robbery at 7:57 p.m. Sunday. The victims were in a car near the tennis courts when two male suspects came up behind the vehicle. Both suspects displayed handguns and demanded the victims’ money. The victims handed over cash and the suspects ran toward Independence Boulevard. The suspects wore hooded sweatshirts and covered their faces.
- Officers responded to an armed robbery at 2 a.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Canterbury Road. The victims and suspects were at a party nearby on Hawthorne Road. The victims stated that while walking home from the party three black men attempted to rob them, shot at the victims and demanded money. An individual drove by and picked up the victims as the suspects ran toward Oleander Drive. The suspects did not get anything from the victims.
- Police responded to an attempted robbery at 1:46 a.m. Sunday on Washington Street. The victim stated he was in his vehicle with his girlfriend when a man knocked on his passenger window. Another man approached the driver-side window of the vehicle with a gun in his hand. The victim sped off, called 911 and went home. Officers located a bullet hole in the trunk of the victim’s car and a shell casing at the scene of the robbery.
- Police responded to an assault at TGI Friday’s on Oleander Drive just after midnight Sunday. The suspect was reportedly impaired and got into an argument with another person at the restaurant about driving. The manager tried to intervene but the suspect placed the manager in a choke hold. The suspect left the restaurant without paying his bill and the manager followed the suspect out of the business to the parking lot. As the suspect left, he reportedly tried to strike the manager with his vehicle. The manager was able to jump out of the path of the vehicle. Officers located Richard Surratt and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon, driving while impaired, underage drinking, defrauding an innkeeper and possession of a fake ID.
- Officers responded to 100 Market St. at 1:15 a.m. Saturday. The victim stated he was in front of Ziggy’s when a black male punched him and attempted to grab items out of his pockets. The victim reportedly fought off the suspect before he could take anything.
Wilmington police charge nine with DWI in checkpoint Friday
The Wilmington Police Department conducted a DWI checkpoint Friday in the 3700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The checkpoint was part of a “Booze It and Lose It” campaign with multiple agencies from the area.
Officers issued the following charges and citations:
- Driving while impaired 9
- Drive after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21 1
- Open container violation 2
- Drive while consuming alcohol 1
- Underage possession of alcohol 5
- Carry a concealed weapon 1
- Child restraint violation 2
- No driver’s license 9
- Driving while license suspended or revoked 5
- Simple possession of marijuana 1
- Aggravated possession of marijuana 1
- Maintain a vehicle for controlled substance 1
- Possess with the intent to sell or deliver marijuana 1
- Manufacture marijuana 1
- Vehicles seized 3
