The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is investigating a sewer spill that occurred Tuesday morning in the vicinity of Forest Hills Elementary School.
Utility crews responded to and stopped a sewer overflow that was reported at 8:50 a.m. May 7 in the 400 block of Alpine Drive. The spill was stopped by 9:40 a.m., according to a notice from the CFPUA.
“The incident involved an overflowing manhole caused by an accumulation of heavy grease (with rags observed) in the pipes from the Mineral Springs Outfall,” the notice states. “Approximately 1,750 gallons of sewage spilled from the manhole and reached a small creek, Mineral Springs, which flows into Burnt Mill Creek.”
The notice states that CFPUA staff lessened the spill’s environmental impact by cleaning the area with vacuum trucks. “Environmental management staff is monitoring water quality in several nearby locations to determine the impact of the spill,” it said.
The spill is under further investigation and has been reported to the N.C. Division of Water Quality.
