SHALLOTTE — Town officials in Shallotte are monitoring water quality after untreated wastewater was discharged Monday morning.

Less than 100 gallons of untreated sewage escaped from a force main located at 516 Lightwood Ln. on Feb. 9. According to a notice from the town, the discharge lasted for less than an hour before a broken line was repaired.

While the town reported all visible wastewater was recovered, the proximity to the Shallotte River triggered a mandatory public notification under North Carolina General Statutes. North Carolina law mandates public notification for any spill over 1,000 gallons or any amount that reaches surface waters.

Samples have been pulled from the river and sent for testing as a precaution. The Department of Water Quality was notified of the spill on Monday and is currently reviewing the incident.
