WILMINGTON — As part of its ongoing outreach, one local Methodist ministry will be ensuring people don’t go hungry this Christmas serving individuals and families in need on Dec. 24.
From 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., individuals and families can pick up the prepared meals at Pine Valley Methodist Church’s Welcome Center, 3788 Shipyard Blvd. At 6:30 p.m. the church is also serving dinner for anyone looking for camaraderie and engagement this holiday.
Annually, Pine Valley serves meals throughout the Wilmington community as part of its Christmas Outreach initiative, which began in 2006. Founded by George Hale, with a focus on advocating for generosity, the first year the church served 250 meals, but it has grown in the 19 years since to feed thousands.
“The original vision was to make sure no family in Wilmington goes hungry over Christmas,” Hale said in a press release. “That mission still drives this outreach today. If everyone took a moment to think about someone else, the impact would be incredible.”
In the week leading up to Christmas, volunteers also deliver meals to area shelters, nursing homes, recovery houses, and fire stations.
“No one should go hungry on Christmas,” Lead Pastor Tim Reaves said in the release.
Hams are donated every December by individuals, as are desserts. The church purchases the side items.
Community members in need of a meal are encouraged to come to Pine Valley Methodist Church on Christmas Eve.
