The Agenda: This week in local government

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, Feb. 20

Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 102 N. Third St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube

The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Board will meet at 3 p.m. at 320 Chestnut St. in Wilmington. The meeting can be livestreamed via Zoom. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A presentation on Navassa’s bike and pedestrian plan
  • A resolution adopting the 2023 WMPO legislative agenda
  • A discussion about the Military Cutoff/Eastwood Road interchange improvements. Read PCD coverage here.

New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. at the historic courthouse, 24 N. Third St. in Wilmington. The meeting can be livestreamed on NHCTV and YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • An update from the New Hanover County ABC Board
  • Consideration of resolution and bylaws establishing the New Hanover County Hispanic/Latino Commission
  • A community health needs assessment presentation

The City of Wilmington/New Hanover County Joint Subcommittee on Opioid Settlement Proceeds will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the City of Wilmington’s City Attorney Conference Room, 305 Chestnut St.

The Town of Kure Beach will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers, 117 Settlers Lane. The agenda includes:

  • Approve the revised FY 22-23 Fee Schedule to reflect the changes to the paid parking program approved by Town Council at the January 18, 2023 meeting
  • Planning and design for the Fort Fisher/K Avenue intersection improvements 
  • Proposed text amendments for criminal enforcement of KBC Provisions

The UNCW board of trustees will hold a special called meeting at 10 a.m. over Zoom. The primary business of the meeting will take place in closed session.

The Town of Oak Island will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. at 4601 East Oak Island Drive. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Consideration of three contracts for the 20th Street canal crossover repairs project, bulkhead repairs at Dutchman Creek/NE 54th Street, and a stormwater project
  • Consideration of action to request a local act to allow the town to adopt and enact ordinances regulating the removal, replacement, and preservation of trees within the town’s territorial jurisdiction

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. Some highlights from the agenda include:

  • A request to adopt the Blueprint Brunswick 2040  comprehensive land use and recreation plan following a public hearing
  • A contract with The Healing Place of New Hanover County to reserve 20 beds for Brunswick County residents at the cost of $198,000
  • An agreement to merge the county and Shallotte’s water systems

Tuesday, Feb. 21

The Town of Burgaw Board of Commissioners will hold a special strategic thinking retreat at 9 a.m. in preparation of the fiscal year 2024 budget. The meeting will be held at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St.

The Town of Burgaw Police Advisory Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St.

The Topsail Beach Beach Inlet and Sound Commission will meet at 2 p.m. at town hall, 820 S. Anderson Blvd. The agenda includes:

  • A discussion about beach vitex
  • An update on the BIS fund
  • Consideration of an amendment to the BIS charter

Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 102 N. Third St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A $2.1 million settlement fee in the matter of Funk Yard LLC v. City of Wilmington
  • A resolution for a $1.34 million contract to Monteith Construction for repairs at the convention center
  • A resolution authorizing an amendment to a financing contract not to exceed $30 million to finance street and sidewalk projects, parks and recreation projects, construction of a new fire station, construction of nCino sports complex and other matters

New Hanover County Non-County Agency Funding Committee will meet at 9 a.m. in the finance conference room at 230 Government Center Drive to discuss funding needs for the fiscal year 2023-2024 budget. If needed, the committee will meet again Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.

The Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw. The meeting may be livestreamed via YouTube. A few items no the agenda include:

  • The appointment of Brad George to the board’s vacant seat
  • The board’s annual audit report
  • An update on the county bicycle and pedestrian plan
  • Approval of a contract with a firm to service the county utility authority’s above-ground water tanks

Wednesday, Feb. 22

The Town of Burgaw Board of Commissioners will hold a special strategic thinking retreat at 9 a.m. in preparation of the fiscal year 2024 budget. The meeting will be held at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St.

Friday, Feb. 24

The Topsail Island Shoreline Protection Commission will meet at 2 p.m. at Surf City Town Hall, 214 W. Florence Way. An agenda was not posted by press. A WebEx link will be available on the website prior to the meeting for livestreaming.
