NEW HANOVER COUNTY — An evening of literature and live music will be featured as part of a fundraiser for the local literacy council.
On April 16, Laurie Gwen Shapiro will read from her latest book, “The Aviator and the Showman,” a retelling of the Amelia Earhart story. It explores Earhart’s decade-long marriage to publisher George Putnam and how it profoundly shaped the aviator’s life.
A question-and-answer with Shapiro will be moderated by Wilmington writer John Jeremiah Sullivan, Southern editor for The Paris Review. Plus, there will be a musical performance by Julia Rothenberger. The event takes place in The Cargo District at The Fuzzy Needle, a boutique specializing in vinyl records, books, and ephemera.
“Events like this are really at the heart of what we’re trying to create at The Fuzzy Needle,” owner Tim Jarman said in a release. “We want the shop to be a place where stories, music, and people can come together in a way that feels real and shared. Welcoming Laurie Gwen Shapiro, alongside local music and a conversation that supports the Cape Fear Literacy Council, makes this one especially meaningful to me and to our space.”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on April 16, with music at 7 p.m., followed by the author reading and question-and-answer session. The evening will conclude with a live DJ set; light refreshments provided.
Admission is $10, with all proceeds benefiting the Cape Fear Literacy Council; contact [email protected] for tickets.
