WILMINGTON — A National Football League player for the Pittsburgh Stealers will be commemorated by the City of Wilmington this Azalea Festival.

At Smoke on the Water on April 6, city officials will claim April 6 Alex Highsmith Day. It will take place at the festival’s third annual Kentucky Derby-style event, benefitting the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation and the Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy of Wilmington. Highsmith’s nonprofit provides physical fitness, nutrition, athletic preparation, family involvement, academic, emotional, and social support for underserved youth.
Ashley High School athlete and Wilmington native Alex Highsmith is a starting linebacker for the Steelers. Mayor Bill Saffo will make the Alex Highsmith Day proclamation at 2:30 p.m. and following will be a Signature event, welcoming guests to don their best hats and fascinators, seersuckers, bow ties and sundresses. There will be best-dressed contests, dancing, giveaways, signature drinks and a cigar lounge.
According to Highsmith Branding Group’s president, Ronnie Highsmith: “The Signature will be a continued annual event with plans to not only support community charities, but to also recognize distinguished community leaders in Wilmington. The funds raised will not only help impact those most in need, but also support programs to motivate youth to be leaders in their respective communities.
Tickets are $25 to $45 for guests 21 and up and the event is 2 p.m. through 7 p.m. Smoke on the Water is located at 3704 Watercraft Ferry Avenue in Riverlights.
