Podcast Dec. 29 – Behind-the-scenes look at unanswered questions, breaking down Freeman Park lawsuits

For our final podcast of 2018, we take a look back at all the unanswered questions from the year.

North Carolina’s sunshine laws require that local governments turn over public documents. But it’s not always a smooth process — and that’s when the law is on our side. When it comes to getting a straight answer out of a public official, on issues that go beyond a simple document request, things get much more complicated.

We take a closer look, not just on the questions that went unanswered, but the ways those questions went unanswered: from flat-out stonewalling to more nuanced “selective responses” to official statements that are often “non-answers.”

Next, it’s time for the year’s last trip to Carolina Beach.

There are currently four dense lawsuits between Carolina Beach and the LLCs that own the land around Freeman Park. We break them down.

First, we recap the basics — what is Freeman Park and who owns it? Then, we get into what Carolina Beach is trying to do with the land. Finally, we get into the counterclaims made by the LLCs, including allegations that Carolina Beach is violating state law – and maybe the Constitution, as well – by profiting off the park.

Stay tuned for articles on both of these issues later this week.
