TOPSAIL BEACH — A new police chief has been hired for the Town of Topsail Beach. Timothy Flewwellin, who has served as interim Chief of Police since Aug. 1, is official leading the helm.
Flewwellin took over in the role following the retirement of Police Chief Sam Gervase. During his time as interim chief, Flewwellin has led the department, strengthening relationships in the community and among staff, according to the town.
The police chief has more than 16 years of experience serving southeastern North Carolina communities. Flewwellin worked with the Burgaw Police Department, Surf City Police Department, and joined the Topsail Beach Police Department in 2017, working through the ranks from patrol sergeant to detective, and in leadership roles on patrol operations, officer development, and community policing.
He completed the Police Chief’s Institute through the North Carolina Justice Academy and attended the University of North Carolina School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration program. Flewwellin is also a certified law enforcement instructor, firearms instructor, and FAA-certified Remote Pilot.
