WILMINGTON — Boombalatti’s will be opening a new ice cream shop in downtown Wilmington, taking over the Brick + Mortar Coffee and Supply location.

Husband and wife owners Wes and Kristen Bechtel plan to open the new location in early 2018. According to Kristen Bechtel, the current location – situated in the Forum, across from Mayfaire – will remain open as the main base of operations, where the ice cream will be made.

“The downtown location will be a little smaller, and so we might not have quite as many flavors there as we do here,” Kristen Bechtel said. “There’s a little less space at that location, but it’ll still be a full shop.”

The Bechtels are working with the same contracting company who helped them renovate Boombalatti’s after they took over the operation from its former owners in 2015. Kristen Bechtel said they don’t have an exact date for the opening of the new location, but don’t foresee any major hurdles to opening the new location.

Bechtel said that, like the current location in the Forum, the new location will also serve Brick + Mortar coffee, continuing the Bechtels relationship with the downtown coffee roasters.

Brick + Mortar co-owner Logan Tudor called the Boombalatti expansion “perfect timing.”

Tudor said he and fellow co-owner Jeff Bridges had wanted to pull back from operating the storefront to focus on roasting coffee, and called the Boombalatti’s expansion “a natural choice” for their current storefront.

“Coffee has always been the driving force for the store, and that’s what we want to do,” Tudor said.

Tudor added that, for the immediate future, Brick + Mortar coffee will be available at both Boombalatti’s locations. He added that several downtown bars also currently feature Brick + Mortar cold brew in their drinks.

“There’s the District (Kitchen & Cocktails), and there’s KGB – they make a drink called ‘Bananas in Pajamas,’ that’s really good,” Tudor said. “So those are two other ways to get our coffee.”

The new Boombalatti’s new location will be at 1005 N. 4th St. in the Brooklyn Arts District of downtown Wilmington. The original location is at 1127 Military Cutoff Road, Unit B, in the Forum.
