A rundown of recent accomplishments from the Cape Fear area:

Good Shepherd Center wins annual TD Charitable Foundation Housing for Everyone grant competition

Good Shepherd Center’s subsidiary Lakeside Partners of Wilmington was awarded a $125,000 affordable housing grant through the TD Charitable Foundation’s Housing for Everyone grant competition.

The grant money will be used to build 24 additional units of affordable housing for chronically homeless adults with disabilities.


South Brunswick Middle School students honored at Good Neighbor Breakfast

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce and South Brunswick Middle School honored students Joshua Alanis, Emma Arndt, Natasha Astudillo Gonzalez, Blake Baker, Carson Beatini, Zachary Brake, Sean Condron, Madison Dean, Michael Derr, Leigh Doll, Caitlyn Dunn, Samuel Enis, Eliel Flores Lopez, Michelle Flores-Cardena, Eduardo Garcia Rubio, Andreanna Graham, Ashton Huffman, Lexi Jones, Karleigh Karnes, Kali Lukas, Matthew Mendez Hines, Nevaeh Rangel, Oliver Simmons, Kennedy Stone, Addison Walker and Laurel Whitworth  for being good neighbors in their school and in their communities.


Cucalorus Connect celebrates 2017 Emergent Leadership Fellows

Cucalorus Connect honored Brett Martin, Rob Kaiser, Scott Moody, Dr. Stephen Harper, Susi Hamilton and Travis Corpening for their positive impact on the Wilmington business community.

According to the press release, the Emergent Leadership fellowship is designated for Wilmington individuals who redefine the local business community in dynamic and visionary ways.


Six NHCS schools receive PBIS state recognition

The North Carolina Department of Instruction recognized Bradley Creek Elementary School, Forest Hills Global Elementary School, Williston Middle School, Holly Shelter Middle School, Wrightsboro Elementary School and Pine Valley Elementary School for their Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program.

PBIS emphasizes the creation of organizational supports and systems that give school personnel capacity to successfully use interventions at the school, district and state levels.


Wilmington Police Department earns Gold Star Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) awarded the Gold Standard Assessment accreditation to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD).

According to the press release, CALEA conducted a strength, weakness, opportunities and threats analysis, (SWOT) received comments from the public and reviewed WPD’s practices over the last three years to determine WPD’s accreditation status.

Colonel Glenn M. McNeill Jr., Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Erik A. Hooks, secretary of the Department of Public Safety, awarded Trooper Matthew C. Eure, Trooper James C. Toon, Retired First Sergeant Harry J. Latta, Trooper Robert O. Melby, Captain Jeff D. Gordon, Sergeant Michael D. Baker, Sergeant Jorge E. Brewer, TSA Julia A. Jordan, Mr. Edward Bottum, Mr. Lee Queen, Sergeant Robert B. Maynard, Trooper Dustin P. Efird, Trooper Mitchell L. Mann, Trooper Jason P. Page, Trooper Jason S. Ratliff, Trooper Andrew B. Depoyster, TSS Charlotte H. West, Sergeant Jason B. Casteen, Trooper Jamie D. Duff, Trooper Christopher M. Jeffries, Trooper Mark W. Corbin and Sergeant Brent E. Hipp.

The awards include State Highway Patrol Award of Valor, Purple Heart Award, Meritorious Service Award, Colonel’s Appreciation Award, Samaritan Award, Tommy Cheek Award for Collision Reduction and the Humanitarian Service Award.

“We are proud to recognize the tremendous efforts and sacrifices that our members nobly make when called upon,” said Colonel Glenn M. McNeill Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “To come together and acknowledge their actions is a joyous occasion for our organization and the State of North Carolina.”


Sea Tow Ocean Isle captains awarded with annual Efforts Above and Beyond and Lifesaving awards

Sea Tow Ocean Isle awarded Captains Kendrick Schwartz and Clay Hughes and Sea Tow Wrightsville Beach Captain Ryan Saporito with their annual Efforts Above and Beyond and Lifesaving Awards.

Sea Tow Ocean Isle selects awardees based on their hard work, dedication and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty for their community.


UNCW is Council of College and Military Educators 2018 Institution Award recipient

The Council of College and Military Educators (CCME) has selected the University of North Carolina Wilmington for their 2018 CCME Institution Award.

According to the press release, the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME) selects one higher education institution in the country and recognizes that institution for their steadfast dedication, exemplary leadership and ongoing commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-affiliated students.
