SURF CITY — Topsail Island, parts of Surf City, and some of the nearby mainland will experience a planned black-out as part of upgrades to the electrical infrastructure on the island.
According to a release from the Johnson-Onslow Electrical Membership Corporation, the outage will commence at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3; loss of electricity is expected to last no longer than three hours.
According to the release, “Power should be restored within three hours and every effort will be made to reduce the outage time even further. We have planned the outage during daylight hours to make the work go as fast as possible and for safer working conditions.”
The outage is necessary, according to the release, to relocate four transmission poles in the area where the Publix grocery store is planned.
The affected areas will include Topsail Island from Ninth Street in Surf City to the south end of the island. It will also affect the mainland, including East Ocean Road from Holly Ridge south to the island.
According to Johnson-Onslow, in the event of inclement weather, the outage will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
