Employees of New Hanover County’s Information Technology department collected more than 900 pounds of food during a recent food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Their contributions will help provide needed food to more than 69,000 individuals at risk for hunger in the four southeastern North Carolina counties served by the food bank. Among those served, more than 20,000 are children and nearly 5,500 are 65 years of age or older.

According to a release from the county, the IT department collected enough food for 768 meals. The food bank distributes those meals to needy families through a network of soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters and nutrition programs for the elderly.

“We are honored to partner with these dedicated employees to address food insecurity in our area,” Jeff Rose, the food bank’s Wilmington branch director, said in the release. “Their generosity will stay here to help our neighbors, our children and our community through a united network of services.”

Established in 1980, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which also accepts donations from individuals, provides more than 150,000 pounds of food every day to 800 nonprofit, community-based emergency feeding programs, serving more than 500,000 individuals at risk of hunger in 34 central and eastern North Carolina counties.
