Sponsored: YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina: Building Healthier Minds, Bodies, and Spirits

WILMINGTON — As health challenges like obesity, chronic diseases, and sedentary lifestyles continue to impact millions of Americans, the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is at the forefront of promoting healthier living through diverse and impactful programs. Nationally, less than a quarter of adults meet recommended physical activity levels, contributing to preventable conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers (Health.govCDC). The YMCA addresses these issues with comprehensive services that inspire movement, wellness, and community connection.

A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness

The Y offers programs tailored to all ages and fitness levels, creating a foundation for lifelong health:

  • Group Exercise Classes: From high-energy cycling classes to calming yoga sessions, participants find motivation and camaraderie while enhancing strength and flexibility.
  • Community Health Programs: Addressing unique local needs, the Y provides resources like nutrition workshops and wellness coaching, helping members and program participants adopt sustainable health practices. The Y recently partnered with Novant Health to enhance its Community Health offerings, which include programs like Healthy Living with Diabetes, Parkinson’s Exercise, and Livestrong at the YMCA, a free program for cancer survivors.
  • Swim and Water Safety Lessons: Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children. Swim and water safety lessons at the Y empower individuals with life-saving skills while promoting cardiovascular health and endurance.
  • Athletics: Encouraging teamwork, discipline, and physical activity, the Y’s sports leagues help build confidence and encourage a love of fitness.

“The special thing about the Y in our community is that it offers programs for everyone, from parent-child swim lessons to seated exercise classes for seniors,” says Josh Gravette, executive director of the Nir Family YMCA on Market Street in Wilmington. “We have a full-service wellness floor, gymnasium, and aquatics center for those looking to take their healthy lifestyles to the next level. The Y truly is a beacon of health in southeastern North Carolina.”
