WILMINGTON — With grateful hearts for a life beautifully lived, yet with profound sadness, we announce that Melanie Millis Watters passed away on May 5, 2026, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in her hometown of Wilmington, NC.
Born on March 5, 1949, Melanie graced this world for 77 years, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
Melanie was a proud graduate of New Hanover High School, class of 1967, and she devoted over three decades of her life to serving others at Glen Meade OB/GYN. Her dedication and compassion left an indelible mark on all those she encountered, as she consistently demonstrated empathy and grace in every aspect of her professional life.
Beyond her work, Melanie was a woman of varied interests and passions. She found joy in reading, relishing the quiet moments that she got lost in the pages of her favorite books. Her skilled hands created beautiful needlepoint pieces, and she delighted in sharing her culinary talents with those she loved. Above all else, it was the time spent with her family and friends that brought her the greatest happiness.
Melanie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Haywood Ralph Watters, Sr., her parents, William F. Millis and Elizabeth Moore Millis, her brother, William “Billy” F. Millis, III, and grandson James Shearon.
She leaves behind a family that adored her, including her siblings Robin Potter (Allen) and Phil Millis (Jill), her daughter Wendy (Tommy), and her son Ralph, Jr. (Lynn) and her grand furbaby Lucy. Melanie’s legacy continues through her treasured grandchildren Laura, Sara, Whitney, Jesse, Joey, Jacob, James, and Lilly, and her precious great-grandchildren Kayden, Lyric, Sylas, Sydalea, Hudson, and Hayden. Her love also extended to her nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she cherished deeply.
A Memorial Service honoring Melanie’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation – Wilmington Chapel. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation, beginning 30 minutes prior to the service, as they celebrate a life beautifully lived. Following the service, the family invites those in attendance for a reception at Melanie’s home to share memories and celebrate her life.
The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Melanie’s honor to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. Their organization relies on the generosity of the community to continue providing compassionate care and support to patients and their families, just as they so lovingly cared for Melanie and her family during her time there.
In her passing, let us carry forward Melanie’s spirit of generosity, warmth, and love, holding her memory close as a source of inspiration.
