WILMINGTON — On April 27, 2026, the world lost a cherished soul as Walter “Rick” Rickey Hill passed away at the age of 68 in Wilmington, NC, following a courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Born on July 7, 1957, in Scotland County, NC, Rick’s life was one woven with dedication, love, and an enduring spirit.
Rick’s professional journey began at Hanover Ironworks, where he honed his skills as a sheet metal mechanic and roofer. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he later co-founded Heritage Roofing and Sheet Metal alongside his sons, Richard and Ryan, a venture that brought him immense pride and from which he eventually retired, though he remained a trusted partner.
A man of many passions, Rick adored fishing, hunting, and tending to his garden. Over the years, his love for animals was evident in his companionships with beagles and coon hounds, and most recently, his beloved Siberian Husky, Raylan, affectionately named after a character from a modern-day Western show he loved. Rick was also known for constructing a remarkable metal deer stand “condo” and could often be found enjoying Western shows. When not working, Rick relished moments spent clearing land or riding around on his tractor, skid steer, or golf cart with Raylan faithfully by his side.
A dedicated community member, Rick graduated from Scotland High School in Laurinburg, NC, and was actively involved in the Cape Fear Optimist Club. He shared his love for sports by coaching baseball for the Cape Fear and Supper Optimist Clubs.
Rick’s life was enriched by his treasured family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Terry R. Hill, their sons Richard “Ricky” Hill and his wife Tina, and Ryan Hill. He leaves behind a granddaughter, Rachel Malpass and her husband Milton, his brother Marvin Hill and wife Jean, sister Vernie Webb and husband Ed, and sister-in-law Pamuela Walker. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Esker and Pauline Hill, brother John Hill, and sister Kathleen Webb.
Rick and Terry’s story began during their temporary stay in Aberdeen, NC. Their first date, shooting pool, marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and adventure.
In honor of Rick’s memory, a Celebration of Life service will be planned by the family at a later date.
Walter “Rick” Rickey Hill will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on through the countless memories and the loving impact he had on all who knew him.
