James Bethea Kilgo III, 69

James “Jim” Bethea Kilgo III (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — James Bethea Kilgo III, age 69, of Wilmington, NC, passed on April 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and love that few could ever match. Born in Charlotte, NC on April 24, 1957, Jim was a man with a dry sense of humor and a heart huge enough for the whole world.

Jim spent his working days as an optician, helping others to see clearly – something he metaphorically did for everyone who knew him. His keen eye wasn’t just limited to lenses but extended to his profound ability to spot how to make others smile.

Jim and his beloved wife, Janet, would often be found traveling to Ocean Isle, creating waves of laughter and memories. Together for 50 years, they were partners in every adventure that life tossed their way, starting from their first meeting at Carowinds. His unwavering dedication to his wife was apparent in the many wonderful ways he spoiled her.

Jim loved sports of all kinds. He rarely missed an opportunity to support his favorite teams with both gusto and opinionated commentary.

Jim was a devoted father to his daughter whom he affectionately called “Mags.” They shared a close bond filled with laughter, inside jokes, and playful teasing, grounded in his deep sincerity and love.

A great dad, fantastic grandfather, wonderful husband, and the kind of friend you hold onto tightly, Jim spread his big personality reserving just enough to keep you wanting more. His friends and family adored his silly, compassionate nature. He was always ready to lend a hand or crack a joke, often both at the same time.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Bethea Kilgo, Jr., leaving behind a trail of cherished stories and laughter. Surviving him are his mother, Wilma Dean Kilgo, his loving wife of 44 years Janet, his daughter Maggie and her wife Grace, his grandson Jamie.

His sister-in-law Patty Ross, his siblings sister Linda Jo Kilgo, Jann Kilgo and husband Rick Kiser, with their daughters Emily and Leslie and their families, and his brother John “Jay” Kilgo, will all miss the warmth of his spirit. As will his best friend Murphy and wife Roberta “Bob” along with their fond memories and a few unfinished jokes.

Services to celebrate Jim’s extraordinary life will be held at Wilmington Chapel on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 7:00 PM, located at 1535 S. 41st Street Wilmington, NC 28403. Those who gather to reminisce will no doubt be left missing his infectious laugh and gentle nature. The Livestream for Jim’s Memorial Service may be viewed here.

While he may have set off on his final journey, Jim will be remembered by his laughter, love, and the joy he shared with everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
