George Eugene “Gene” Cain (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — George Eugene “Gene” Cain, 86, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026. Born May 13, 1939, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Gene lived a life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and deep friendships that spanned decades.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary Evelyn Campfield and George Amos Cain.

Gene is lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Mary Cain; his sons, Gary Cain and Daniel Cain (Sarah); his cherished granddaughter, Mary Hayden Cain; his sisters Janette Burkett, Ann Jones, and Janie Jones, whom he loved dearly; and special family friends Karin Brandt, Paige Riggs, Ryan Riggs, Lindsey Riggs, and Karen Riggs. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in the life and legacy they built together.

Gene proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962. During his time in service, he formed lifelong friendships, including special bonds with Don Wasserman, Dan Wolfe, Chuck Lewis, and many others who remained dear to him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Gene enjoyed a dedicated career with Budweiser, where he worked for 20 years before retirement. Outside of work, Gene found his greatest joy on the water. An avid fisherman, he especially loved flounder fishing and treasured countless days spent casting lines alongside his best friend, the late Ted Connor.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team with VA Home Based Primary Care — especially Karen Lovin, Jo Ellen Price, Chad Crossen, Jay Holliday, Shannon Godwin, and Dr. Carol Lilly-Reynolds — whose incredible care and support meant so much to Gene and his loved ones. Additional thanks are given to the loving caregivers at All Ways Caring, who surrounded Gene and the family with kindness and comfort throughout this journey.

Gene will be remembered for his steady presence, his loyalty to friends, his love of family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Gene’s honor to the Disabled American Veterans or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

Please leave condolences for the family here.
