Michael J. Dolan, 72

Michael J. Dolan (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Michael J. Dolan, 72, passed away on January 21, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on June 23, 1953, in Bad Sachsa, Germany, Mike lived a life defined by a sharp wit, an expansive generosity, and a spirited pursuit of adventure.

As the son of a service member, Mike’s childhood was a map of Air Force bases from the Northeast to Guam. This early exposure to the world perhaps sparked the curiosity, agility, and resourcefulness he carried into adulthood.

After high school, Mike earned his bachelor’s degree at Siena University, where he served in the student government and was known to his tight-knit group of friends as “Skeeter.” He went on to earn his MBA, magna cum laude, with a concentration in statistics and operations research from Union College. He then settled down on Cape Cod to raise his family as a devoted father and dependable provider who was constantly engaged in his children’s activities, hobbies, and interests.

In his professional life, Mike was an accomplished statistician, data scientist, analytic programmer, and technologist. Over the course of a distinguished career spanning more than 40 years, he transformed complex questions into clear, meaningful insights across a wide range of industries. He was the founder and CEO of The American Analytic Institute where he brought rigor and imagination to his work, even receiving a U.S. patent for his unique data modeling system. He also took pride in mentoring the next generation as a professor and lecturer at multiple universities.

Mike always balanced his natural instincts for numbers with his love of nature. He was at home wherever the water met the shore, whether it was Cape Cod Bay, the North Carolina coast, or the rugged beauty of Downeast Maine. He was an expert skier and an avid tennis player who also enjoyed golf, cycling, and travel. He had a soft spot for animals and a particular affinity for the famously affable and easygoing Newfoundland breed of dogs.

In the last decade of his life, Mike found his true home in the beautiful and wild state of Maine. He took great pleasure in inviting friends and family to visit and enjoy his new surroundings at “Camp Dolan.” He welcomed people to join him in navigating the vast and rocky Meddybemps Lake, racing through the open water on jet skis, and unwinding around a campfire under a million stars.

Mike moved through life with kinetic energy and endless enthusiasm. His presence, well-timed quips, and notoriously incisive wordplay could command a room or break the ice with equal ease. Those fortunate enough to be counted among his friends will deeply miss his company and the effortless joy he brought to every gathering.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, George Dolan. He is survived by his mother, Gudrun “Corrine” Wigley; his children, Eric Dolan and Jessica Dolan; his grandchildren, Kiran Dolan, Rohan Dolan, and Alina Dolan; his loving partner, Grace Davis; Mary Lou Dolan, the mother of his children, with whom he enjoyed a 28 year marriage. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Mulligan.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held in summer 2026 at his lakeside cabin in Maine, allowing time for reflection and shared stories. Until then, those who knew him can imagine Mike somewhere beyond the horizon, finally able to once again fly down the steepest double black diamond run, and reminding us all to live life with the same intensity he did.
