WILMINGTON — Don Spencer Robertson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, veterinarian, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026.
Born on October 10, 1936, in King, North Carolina, Don was the beloved son of Mamie Jones Robertson and Spencer Blackburn Robertson. He remained deeply proud of his hometown throughout his life, carrying with him the values, friendships, and sense of community that shaped who he was.
Don graduated from King High School in 1955. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degrees in zoology and poultry science from North Carolina State University in 1959, followed by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Oklahoma State University in 1963. On June 18, 1960, he married the love of his life, Cynthia Tillotson Robertson, beginning a remarkable 65-year marriage rooted in love, faith, respect, and unwavering partnership.
Following veterinary school, Don worked at Winston Veterinary Hospital from 1963 to 1965, then at Brentwood Veterinary Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, from 1965 to 1966. In 1966, he returned home and established Oldtown Veterinary Hospital, where he built a deeply fulfilling and highly respected practice. What began as a solo endeavor grew into a successful five-doctor practice, serving the community faithfully until his retirement in 2008. Don was a true animal healer—compassionate, honest, and humble—loved by his clients and respected by colleagues. He was profoundly grateful for his loyal employees and for the many veterinarians whose careers he helped launch and mentor over the years.
After retirement, Don and Cynthia returned to the family farm in King, where he had grown up. There, they enjoyed 36 acres of beautiful countryside and the simple life he cherished so deeply. Don was always proud of King, his family, and the lifelong friendships he maintained there.
Don faithfully served and attended Pfafftown Christian Church from 1966 until relocating with Cynthia to Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2016. His faith in God was a constant source of strength.
Don’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia; his son, Scott Robertson and his wife, Jill Robertson; his daughter, Alesia Robertson Jefferson and her husband, Frank Jefferson; his grandchildren, Emma Robertson, Dr. Frank Jefferson IV (wife: Laken Jefferson), Alexandria Jefferson-Heathcott (husband: Cole Heathcott), Camryn Jefferson; and his great grandson, Townes Jefferson (parents: Frank and Laken Jefferson).
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Davis Community of Wilmington and Lower Cape Fear Life Center for their compassionate care, and to a very special friend, Buffy Edwards, whose kindness, companionship, and help at home brought great joy and comfort to Don during his final year.
Don Robertson will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Private services will be held with family. In lieu of flowers, Don would have everyone pause to remember the importance of a simple life—sight, health, and love.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.
