Lola J. Benson, 61

Lola Jean Benson (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Lola J. Benson, 61, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, surrounded in love by her daughters and sister.

Born January 23, 1964, in Wilmington, North Carolina, Lola was the daughter of Margaret and Wade Beaujon.

She is survived by her husband, William Benson; her children Tabitha and spouse Roy Ruvalcaba, Tonya and spouse Winston Walker; her grandson, Marcus Walker; her stepson, Christopher Benson, and granddaughter, Renee Benson; her sister, Cheryl “Sherrie” Lewis; her niece, Felicia Malpass and spouse Devon Robinson; and great-nieces, Alanah and Adalynn Robinson. Along with her dog, Popcorn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Beaujon and Malcom “Big Mac” Hodge, as well as her grandparents, Charlotte and Joseph Spivey.

Lola will be remembered most for her deep love for God and His son, Jesus Christ. She loved listening to gospel music, teaching Bible school, and serving alongside her church family. She loved all things Jesus. Lola had a rare blend of kindness, wisdom, and wit: she could tell you the truth straight or sugarcoat it with grace. Stronger than most, she taught her girls what it means to be resilient and to trust the Lord.

Professionally, Lola dedicated much of her life to property management in Florida, where she was cherished by residents and made many lifelong friends. Most recently, she worked as a cashier at Skippers in Leland, where she adored her work family and the people she met.

Creative to her core, Lola enjoyed coloring, crafting, and crocheting. She loved spending time with her loved ones, playing board games and cards. She also found joy in fishing, gardening, and reading. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire Woodburn church family, as well as Devan and Sonny from Skippers, for the kindness and support they showed our mom. Special thanks also go to the Novant Health care team, in the Surgical Pavilion especially nurses Emma and James — Dr. Lindsey Buckingham, MD, and team; Dr. Lucas Faulkenberry, MD; Joyce Ren-Sun, PA-C; and all the staff and volunteers from the cancer center.

The family welcomes flowers to be sent to Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, located at 1535 South 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.
