LELAND — David Bruce Crawford of Leland, North Carolina, went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 22, 2025, after a sudden illness, leaving a void his family cannot fill.
Born on January 15, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to J.O. and Porta Crawford, David spent his childhood in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from Loy Norrix High School before joining the U.S. Army, where he served honorably. Following his service, David earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University.
In 1971, David married the love of his life, Jodie. The couple settled in Traverse City, Michigan, where they raised their three children. David worked as an auto engineer with United Technologies for over 25 years. Upon retirement in 2005, the family moved to Leland, North Carolina. David continued sharing his passion for learning as a high school teacher at North Brunswick High School until 2015.
David was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He earned his Eagle Scout badge at the age of 15 and later obtained his private pilot’s license. He had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed golf, camping, and fishing, often dreaming of returning to Northern Michigan to enjoy those pastimes once again.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jodie; his son Christopher (Nichole) Crawford of Apex, NC; his daughter Katie Crawford of Leland, NC; and his sister JoClair (Bernie) Dersnah of Gainesville, GA. He was a proud grandfather to Mannix Crawford, Conner Crawford, Christopher Crawford, Nicholas Molcomb, Noah Barker, and Annabelle Barker. He is also survived by his niece, Gwen Hawn, and nephews, Steven Dersnah, Kevin Burdett, and Jeremiah Burdett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.O. and Porta Crawford; his son, Jason Crawford; and his in-laws, Robert Sites, Ronald Burdett, and Sandra Neely.
David will always be remembered for the deep love he had for his family, his resourcefulness, and the joy he brought to those around him. As his family fondly says, “If Pops can’t fix it, no one can.” His legacy lives on in the stories, lessons, and memories he shared with all who knew him.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
