Nicholas “Nick” Hrinkevich (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

LELAND — Nicholas “Nick” Hrinkevich, a brilliant mind and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, in Leland, NC, at the age of 90. Born on February 10, 1935, in Minsk, USSR, Nick’s extraordinary journey began with his immigration as a young child to the United States through Ellis Island. Growing up in the vibrant heart of New York City, he would go on to forge a remarkable life characterized by intellect, passion, and love.

Nick was an exceptionally bright individual who earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering. His career was defined by his impactful work with Bristol Myers-Squibb, where he traveled the world to secure government approvals for numerous life-changing drugs. His dedication not only advanced his field but also improved countless lives globally.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nick had a host of personal interests that filled his days with joy. He was an avid golfer and a passionate horse racing enthusiast. He held a special interest in local high school sports, faithfully tracking scores and outcomes in the newspaper. He played college baseball at City College of New York and remained a devoted New York Yankees fan throughout his life. Nick was always active in sports with his sons and daughter growing up, serving as both an avid fan and coach, and continued this enthusiasm with his grandchildren as their biggest supporter. He also enjoyed playing bridge, poker, and pinochle with his friends and family, cherishing these moments of connection and friendly competition.

In 1961, Nick married the love of his life, Helena (Bidovski) Hrinkevich, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 54 years until her passing in December 2015. Together, they raised their family with love and shared values. After growing up in New York City, Nick and Helena settled in South Brunswick, New Jersey, where they lived for over 30 years before moving to the Rossmoor community in Monroe Township in 1996. Nick converted to the Episcopal faith alongside Helena and was an active member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Spotswood and later St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Monmouth Junction. He continued his faith journey as a parishioner at Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia, Maryland, where he found spiritual community and purpose.

Above all else, Nick cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, finding immense joy in his expanding family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Martha Hrinkevich, his cherished granddaughter Nicole, and his beloved wife Helena.

Nick leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration in his surviving family: his children, Lara Dombrowski and her husband Joe, Craig Hrinkevich and his wife Arlene, and Nicholas A. Hrinkevich and his wife Kathleen. He is also fondly remembered by his loving grandchildren, Taylor and her husband Geoff, Mary, Meg, Faith, Casey, and Maddy, and his great-grandchildren, Zoe, Heidi, and Beau, who carry forward his spirit and values.
