Ellen Virginia King Smith, 77

WILMINGTON — Affectionately known as Jennie, Ellen Virginia King Smith gained her angel wings on Nov. 11, 2024, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington.

Jennie was born in Bishopville, SC, to the late Lacy Dow and Verda Stevens King on May 25, 1947. She grew up on Spencer Avenue in New Bern, NC, graduating from New Bern High School and then attending both UNC Wilmington and UNC Chapel Hill. She retired from Southern States Chemical after over 40 years of service.

Jennie was an avid bridge player, playing with the same “Golden Girls” for over 45 years. Her dear friends Maxine Fishero and bridge partner Penny Taylor define friendship in every sense.

Surviving are her son, Malcolm Smith and wife Jennifer, her daughter, Heather Smith Savage, and her six grandchildren that she adored, Lacie Elizabeth Savage, John Patrick Smith, Carlie Morgan Savage, Michael David Savage II, Jorja Lynn Smith, and Sidney Jane Smith.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or Brunswick County Animal Shelter. At Jennie’s request, no services are planned, but in honor of her fiesty spirit, please do something nice for yourself today!
