WILMINGTON — Darryl Sidney Nester, born on July 27, 1959, in Wilmington, NC, bid farewell to this world on Saturday, February 3, 2024, also in Wilmington. He was a truly remarkable man who lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and a touch of mischievousness. Darryl’s age at the time of his passing was 64.
Darryl led an incredibly fulfilling career, serving his country with honor as a proud member of the US Marines. After his time in the military, he channeled his dedication to public service by joining the Wilmington Police Department, eventually retiring as a Sergeant in 2012. Not one to rest on his laurels, Darryl shared his knowledge and experience by teaching Basic Law Enforcement at Cape Fear Community College.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Darryl possessed an array of talents and interests. There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t do, but his true passion lay in organization. He had a remarkable knack for keeping things in order, which came in handy as he and his beloved wife Vicki were active members of the Carolina Airstream Club. They reveled in attending various events and had already planned to make their way to the 2024 International Airstream rally in Missouri come October.
Darryl’s caring nature extended beyond his immediate circle. Since 2011, he was a dedicated member of Compassionate Friends, where he mentored fellow members, providing them with support and guidance. Additionally, he proudly belonged to the Police Benevolent Association, always looking out for his brothers and sisters in blue.
Darryl was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Sibbach on April 28, 2011 and his parents, James Douglas (JD) and Mabel Marie Dodson Nester.
Darryl’s family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Vicki Miller Nester, who stood by his side through thick and thin. His daughter Stacy Sibbach held a special place in his heart, while his brother Noel Nester and wife Gayle, along with his nephew James Walters, added to the joy in his life. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted family members. Darryl will forever live in the hearts and memories of the people he touched, whether for a brief moment or as a lasting friend…
