WILMINGTON — Gregory Lee Hewitt, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on January 7, 2024, at the age of 68.
Born on July 4, 1955, in Lansing, Michigan, Gregory’s passion for automobiles and his commitment to providing exceptional service spanned throughout his life.
Greg was listed as first in his graduating class at Lincoln Tech Institute educated in automotive and diesel technology, beginning his career in the Baltimore metropolitan area Goodyear Stores and other auto shops. He was an ASE Certified Master Mechanic.
Greg worked as a mechanic and service writer, leaving an indelible mark on various establishments such as Parrish Caine Auto Service, Capital Ford, and Car Quest. His expertise and unwavering work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike.
Outside of his professional life, Gregory found solace in his beloved hobby of fishing. He would spend countless hours immersed in nature, casting his lines and cherishing the tranquility that came with it. He was proud to have been awarded a Bass Citation Award.
A veteran of the US Navy, Greg served as an Airdale (Airmans Mate) in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from June 1973 to June 1975. His time in the military allowed him to develop invaluable skills and forge lifelong friendships.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Graydon Hewitt and Bonnie Rice Hewitt, as well as his brother, Larry Hewitt.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 44 years, Deborah “Deb” Hewitt, their daughter Kimberly Ford and her husband Brian, his sister Karen Hewitt Hill and her husband Danny; and his cherished grandson, Colton Ford. Additionally, he will be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews whose lives he touched.
In honoring Greg’s wishes, no formal services are planned. However, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.
