WILMINGTON — Mayo Pierce Watts, age 97, passed away peacefully to her eternal home in Heaven on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center in Wilmington.
Mayo’s legacy of selfless commitment and service to her family and friends exemplified God’s command to love your neighbor as yourself. Her home was always a welcome place for a kind word, a laugh, or a tasty hot meal. She loved to share her delicious lemon cakes with members of the local forestry service or with residents of local nursing homes.
Mayo’s life was her family, yet she still found time to successfully co-own Mayo’s Nursery, founded in 1978. If you look around in April, you will see many of the beautiful azaleas blooming in New Hanover, Pender and surrounding counties as a result of a family team effort in this business.
Mayo was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, James Watts, and her son Davey. She is survived by her loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. These include Norma Covil (Jerry) and grandchildren Mitchell Harris, Stephanie Covil Carter and Stephen Covil and seven great-grandchildren; Tommy Watts (Debbie) and grandson Jason Watts (Jordan), great granddaughter Cameron; Janet Carroll (Terry), granddaughter Jamie Carroll, great-granddaughter Kirsten, and great-great-grandchildren Caleb and Liam Kane.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 1, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, with the Rev. Durwood Maready officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 PM until time of services. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington. Pallbearers will be Mitchell Harris, Jason Watts, Weston and Wesley Jenkins, Hardy Parker and Donald Irving.
