Gary Clive Guthrie, II, 50

WILMINGTON — Gary Clive Guthrie, II, of Charlotte, NC passed away at his home on October 31, 2021. Gary was born on January 11, 1971, in Orlando, Florida to Gary and Winifred Guthrie. He graduated from Brevard College with a degree in Music Theory and studied Music Industry at Appalachian State University. Over the years, Gary was a drummer in many bands that played all throughout Charlotte and across NC. He was somewhat of a legend in the NC music scene. He began as early as age 15 with his first band, The Trees – just four high school friends performing their original music. Gary loved spending time outdoors whether it was with his daughters at Carowinds riding the highest roller coasters, snowboarding at Snowshoe Mountain, WV, surfing at Carolina Beach or gourmet cooking alongside his brother Greg. To support his love of making music, Gary worked as a waiter at many local restaurants but most recently The Fig Tree in Charlotte.

The loves of his life were his two daughters, Cameron and Claire, whom he worked diligently to provide for. He was often found in the front row for Cameron’s cheerleading competitions and in Claire’s classroom reading to her and to her classmates. Gary always threw the best garage band/dance birthday parties for the girls. He provided snacks and catering services to his Charlotte friends whenever they needed help and often spent time with his former in-laws, the Reetzkes, doing odd jobs and making catering platters for their church functions. He gave the most thoughtful gifts at every holiday and was the first to crack a joke in any uncomfortable situation. His laughter was infectious, and the sparkle in his eye always full of mischief. His absence in our lives will be noticeable.

Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Geoffrey P Guthrie in 1993. Gary is survived by his daughters, Cameron and Claire Guthrie of Davidson; his parents, Gary, and Winifred Guthrie of Wilmington; his brother, Gregory T. Guthrie and his wife, Katherine of Wilmington; his sister, Margaret Huver of Wilmington; former wife Marie Guthrie, her daughter Gia Lundy, and Marie’s parents James and Laurie Reetzke of Davidson; along with his “bonus sister” and brother-in-law, Heather and Kyle Deutschle of Charlotte. Gary also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, including Eric, Nick and Drew Huver, MaryJane, Anna and Sophie Deutschle, and Olive and Eleanor Guthrie; as well as several uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A memorial service followed by interment will take place on Friday, November 12, 2021, at 1 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1219 Forest Hills Drive in Wilmington, NC. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, a donation may be made to a Memorial Educational Fund established to benefit his daughters: https://gofundme.com/f/gary-guthrie-memorial-education-fund. Or, more simply, perform a random act of kindness in Gary’s memory whenever you think of him.
