Margaret Stowe Williams, 99, quietly determined and fiercely independent

WILMINGTON — Margaret Stowe Williams, 99, died Tuesday, May 11, 2021. She was preceded in death by Marshall Williams, her husband of 69 years. Born May 6, 1922, in Asheboro, she was the only child of the late Walter and Vallie Stowe.

As a young woman, Margaret graduated from Duke University with a degree in botany. Later, as a part of the war effort, she and small group of women completed a yearlong drafting course at North Carolina State, after which she worked in the drafting department at Pratt Whitney. After World War II, she was the only woman working as a draftsman for an office of the North Carolina State Highway Administration.

Margaret was a patient and loving caregiver to her family, often thinking of others before herself. Those who knew her also knew that she was quietly determined and fiercely independent.

She is survived by her children, Jan Toomes, and husband, Steve, Greg Williams, and wife, Suzy, and Patricia Bair, and husband, Craig, grandchildren, Brian Toomes, Michael Toomes, Natalie Dornan, Colynn Foster, Bryan Bair and Bryce Bair; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to a extend a special thank you to her caregivers at Davis Health Care Center.
