Roger Murray Swilley, 67, loved jet skiing on the Intracoastal Waterway

Roger Murray Swilley

WILMINGTON — Roger Murray Swilley, 67, passed away Friday, April 16, 2021, following a courageous battle against cancer. He was the beloved husband of Judy for nearly 22 years. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1953 to the late Paul Swilley and the late Ruth Swilley.

Roger was a nurse anesthetist at heart, having practiced anesthesia in many locations across the country, but moving to Wilmington in the late 1980s to practice at Cape Fear Hospital. He then took his love of medicine to PPD, where he was one of the original employees at the company.

He always had a passion for the water. In recent years, he loved riding his jet ski on the Intracoastal Waterway. He also loved to travel and visited many countries with his wife Judy. Most of all, he loved his family and friends. Roger and his wife were soulmates, best friends and deeply in love after 26 years together.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beautiful daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Brian; two adorable grandbabies; and stepson, Patrick. Roger was so happy to welcome Brian to our family and also thought of Patrick as his own son. And he loved being a granddaddy to those beautiful grandbabies. In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his brother Mark.

Roger’s family would like to thank so many friends who have supported and loved them over the past 16 months as he so bravely fought. Your love and caring meant the world to us as we navigated through some very difficult times. A very special thanks to the amazing nurses and staff on the 7th floor at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the palliative care team from Lower Cape Fear LifeCare who cared for him in his final days. Their care and devotion to Roger was incredible, and we will always be so very grateful for all of you.

A service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 24, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel followed by cremation.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, specifically for the Zimmer Cancer Center; or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center.
