WILMINGTON — Robert Livious “Bob” Upton Jr., 88, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare due to complications from his battle with Lewy body dementia.

He was born March 2, 1933, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Robert Livious Upton Sr. and Margaret Blount Upton.

Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran in the Korean War. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, as well as the William and Mary College in Norfolk. He resided in Succasunna, New Jersey, before retiring from Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, New Jersey.

Bob previously served as a deacon at Founders Baptist Church in Dover, New Jersey, and later became a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Wilmington. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will also be remembered as Wilmington Christian Academy’s number one sports fan for many years, and all the athletes adored him.

In addition to his parents, Bob was also preceded in death by his son, Paul Mark Upton; grandchild, Kenneth Bradford Seal; and son-in-law, Michael Johnston.

Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Fichter Upton; son, Robert Upton III (Tonya) of Wilmington; daughters, Nancy Johnston and Joanne Seal (Tony), both of Wilmington, and Joyce Attoe (Joel) of Middlesex; sister, Joyce Upton of Chesapeake, Virginia; grandchildren, Philip Johnston (Beth), James Johnston, Jacquelyn Meadows (Drew), Katheryn Moore (Ethan), Leighton Upton (Janelle), Shae Fisher (Colin), Julianne Attoe and Joel Attoe II; and great-grandchildren, Michal Ann Johnston and Calvin James Upton.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 2, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Wilmington, with Pastor David Robinette officiating and the U.S. Navy performing Military Honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
