LELAND — Martha F. “Faye” Akins Long, 85, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Faye was born Sept. 27, 1935, in Bratt, Florida, a daughter of the late Johnnie Akins and Miarell Wiggens Akins. Her beloved husband of 50 years, Herbert Long Jr.; and brother, John Akins Jr., preceded her in death.

Faye was a member of First Baptist Church of Leland and Bridge of Life Community Church. She owned and operated the Dairy Dip and the North Brunswick Hardware Store in Leland. Faye was an avid football and baseball fan, especially her Atlanta Braves. She had many friends and support in the community, loved her “Thursday Chicks” meetings and was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Faye was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

She is survived by three sons, Tony Long of Leland, Johnny Long (Beth) of Clayton and Chris Long (Tabitha) of Mason, West Virginia; eight grandchildren, Joshua Long, Zack Long, Megan Long, Kayla Long, Lauren Long, Hunter Long, Cole Long and Donavin Chapman; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Travis Akins (Stella), and sister, Brenda White (Joe), all of Pensacola, Florida.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13, at First Baptist Church of Leland Cemetery with Pastor Jerome Bullard officiating. All are invited to attend, but facemasks are recommended while maintaining social distancing.

Pallbearers will be Josh “J.J.” Long Jr., Hunter Long, Josh Long, Chris Long, Zack Long and Donavin Chapman. Honorary pallbearers will be David Burney, Craig Coker, Steve Burton, Tucker Burton and Cole Long.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to her caregiver, Mary Calhoune, with Senior Helpers of Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Faye’s memory may be made to Brunswick Senior Resources, P.O. Box 2470, Shallotte, NC 28459.
