WILMINGTON — Marilyn Caisse Machler, 84, formerly of Westfield, Massachusetts, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018, at her home.

She was born Oct. 14, 1933, to Raymond and Florence Bennett Caisse. She was the wife and friend of Richard Machler for 62 years. Originally from Westfield, Massachusetts, where they met, they married July 5, 1957.

She leaves four sons, Michael of Westfield, Massachusetts, Dean of Clinton, North Carolina, Scott of Westfield, Massachusetts, and Todd, and his wife, Belinda, of Morganton, North Carolina; several step-brothers; sister, Nancy O’Hara of Murphy, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Nick, Heather, Tiffany and Maegan; and two great-grandchildren, Roscoe and Emma.

The family would like to thank Dr. Russell Gerry for the care he extended over several years and her dear friends, Peggy and Elaine, for their compassion during difficult times.

Marilyn was a strong and compassionate woman who was liked by all. She faced Parkinson’s disease and cancer with courage that should set an example for all.

Marilyn was a competitive tennis player, playing the club circuit whenever she had the opportunity. She was a sought after partner in doubles matches and played singles whenever the opportunity arose. She had won several awards and tennis was her dream. She had worked at the Springfield Armory as well as the Westfield Transportation system until family responsibilities of four sons came first. In between, she would skip out for a set of tennis when the opportunity was available.

She and her husband spent many years vacationing in Aruba and were distinguished visitors to the island. They also traveled to many European countries on their own while enjoying every minute of independent travel. In the early years, they loved to camp with their sons at the national parks.

She was very skilled and made clothes for every member of the family, along with stuffed animals for children. Later, she made and sold jewelry during her retirement and quietly did custom pieces upon request for many.

She will be missed as she sails away on her journey. She was a woman who was truly loved.

In lieu of flowers, she would want friends to take a special day and live it to the fullest with someone you love.

Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 28, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington.
