Burris Swinson, 91, his cheerful disposition left a lasting impression on others

WILMINGTON — Burris Swinson, 91, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018, in the comfort and care of the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center, Wilmington.

He was the son of Henry Swinson and Dunni Horne Swinson. He was a proud staff sergeant and tank mechanic in the U.S. Army while serving during the last years of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from G.E. and worked for over 18 years for A&P Grocery store.

Burris was a faithful servant of the Lord who left a lasting impression on everyone he met with his warm smile and laughter. He was a member of the Ogden Baptist Church since 1963. In his later years, he also worshiped at Topsail Baptist Church.

He raised his children in Northwoods and was a fatherly influence to many family, friends and neighbors.

Burris was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Ruby Swinson; parents, Henry and Dunni Horne Swinson; sisters, Olean Midgett, Irene Mahn and Eleanor White; and brother, Durwood Swinson.

Burris is survived by sons, Donald Burris Swinson, and his wife, Denise, and Kelvin Eric Swinson; daughters, Deborah Swinson Goodwin, and her husband, Lynn, and Susan Kay Swinson; sister, Evelyn Deal; brother, Gene Swinson; grandchildren, Jennifer Weisman, Drew Matthews, Wesley Goodwin, Trent Matthews, Daniel Swinson and Caleb Swinson; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jace and Jaxton Weisman, Tristan Goodwin, Mary Camron Matthews and Maddox James Matthews, who will be born soon.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home, 315 Willow Woods Drive, Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 15, at the funeral home with the Rev. Daniel Justice officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Andrew “Drew” Matthews, Wesley Goodwin, Trent Matthews, Daniel Swinson, Caleb Swinson, Jacob Weisman, Jace Weisman, Mark Brooks, Donald Dollyhigh, David Goza and Dennis Patram. Honorary pallbearers include David Morgan, Gene Swinson, Jay Deal, Billy Hanna, and the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Ogden Baptist Church.
