Charles Henry Johnson

WILMINGTON — Charles Henry Johnson passed away on Thursday, May 25, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, surrounded by family and loved-ones.

He was born in Huntington, N.Y., on Feb. 20, 1931, son of Charles and Mary Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maria Johnson; two brothers, Bob and Harold Johnson; two daughters, Colleen Clarke and Jeanne Ann Bruno; four sons, Rick, Mike, Craig and Kevin Johnson; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly.

Charles was an educator and an avid sportsman.  He played college football for the University of Georgia in the 50s.  He was elected to the Huntington Softball Hall of Fame in 1979, and either coached or refereed youth baseball, basketball, football and lacrosse throughout the 80s while teaching at Harborfields Elementary.

He was a member of the Oakdale Sportsman’s Club and Founder of the New York Sportfishing Federation, devoting a lifetime towards fisheries management and environmental conservation.

His final years were spent enjoying the love of family and watching his under-performing New York sports teams.  He was a master gardener and member of the Bluebird Society of Landfall.  His personal garden was the envy of the neighborhood and will delight for years to come.

Charlie will be missed, but not forgotten.

His family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., Sunday, May 28, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington, NC, 28412.
