Paula Kornegay Patchell, 79, longtime Sunday school teacher who loved to travel

Paula Kornegay Patchell, 79, of Wilmington, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Cypress Pointe Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Paula was born Jan. 18, 1936 in Wilmington, daughter of the late Giles Roscoe Kornegay and Ruth Winslow Kornegay. Her husband, David C. Patchell, Jr., preceded her in death.

Paula was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Calvary Baptist Church since 1971. She was a 1954 graduate of New Hanover High School, and attended Mars Hill College and East Carolina University. She worked at the New Hanover County Library for many years, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She taught Sunday school for many years and loved traveling.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily P. Eldridge (Gerald); son, David C. Patchell, III (Johanna); and six grandchildren, Amanda, Sarah and Kira Eldridge and Landen, Mikaela and Ethan Patchell. Paula was an only child, but claimed a lifelong friend, Mary Witherspoon Harrell of Cumming, Georgia, as a sister.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Donnie Lovette officiating. Interment will follow in the Burgaw Cemetery in Burgaw.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 423 N. 23rd St., Wilmington, NC 28405.
