Benjamin Thomas Smith, 84, served in US Air Force with honor and distinction

Benjamin Thomas Smith, 84, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Trinity Grove of Wilmington.

Ben was born Oct. 7, 1931 in Wadesboro, the son of the late John Wilson Smith and Fannie Hutchinson Smith.

Ben served with honor and distinction as an Airman Second Class in the United States Air Force. He worked for many years as a civil engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.

Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Miriam Mumford Smith; children Ron Smith, Gail Cassada, Susan Sharpton and Sharon Keyser; 10 grandchildren; brother John Smith; sister Gwen Surratt; two nieces; step-children Shirley Bernadas, Linda Rhodes and Jackie Nolan; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren.

Together with his parents, he was predeceased by his stepson, Cliff Moore.

The family will receive friends at a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8 at Masonboro Baptist Church, 1501 Beasley Road, Wilmington, NC 28409. A service to celebrate Ben’s life will follow at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to your favorite charity, in memory of Ben, would be greatly appreciated.
