Katharine “Kappy” Nicholson Medlock, of Wilmington, died Oct. 8, 2015, at the age of 87.

Kappy was the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Augustus Washington Knox, of Raleigh, and the daughter of Paul and Katharine Nicholson, of Port Washington, New York. She was born on April 11, 1928.

Kappy received her degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1948. She worked for American Airlines and McCan, Erickson Advertising agency in New York City. In 1955, Kappy married Donald L. Medlock. They lived briefly in New York City, then moved to Port Washington, where they raised their family. In 1995, they moved to Wilmington to enjoy their retirement.

Kappy enjoyed gardening, where her good taste and hard work were visible in the lovely landscaping of their home. She loved playing tennis and paddle tennis at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. Trout fishing in the Catskills, playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles were among her favorite activities. She was an accomplished needle pointer. She was a superb and thoughtful hostess, as all who attended any of her parties would attest! After moving to Wilmington, Kappy took up golf, where she played with the “9-holers” group.

Kappy was a devoted wife and mother with her family first and foremost in her mind. Her husband, Donald, preceded her in death in 2012.

She is survived by her children, Katharine M. Tuteur (Dan), of Evergreen, Colorado, Margaret M. Fitzgerald (Tom), of Riverside, California and William N. Medlock (Kathy), of Chapel Hill; sister, Elizabeth N. DeLan, of Pennsburg, Pennsylvania; and nine grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Josi Walton for her deep compassion and care of our mother, as well as the staff from Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at St. Andrews On-the-Sound, 101 Airlie Road, Wilmington, NC 28403.

Kappy will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews on the Sound at the address above or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1440 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
