Bettie Page Herbert Sykes, 77, creative language arts teacher

Bettie Page Herbert Sykes, of Wilmington, died quietly and peacefully on Jan. 15, 2015, at the age of 77.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington, followed by a service celebrating her life at 2 p.m.

Bettie was born on Nov. 26, 1937, in Raleigh, daughter of the late Charlie Herbert and Elia Belle Page Herbert. She grew up in Garner and graduated from Garner High School. She graduated from Mars Hill University in Mars Hill and also from Meredith College in Raleigh. Following college graduation, Bettie served as a lieutenant junior grade in the US. Navy.

Bettie was an elementary school teacher. She loved teaching language arts and loved her students. She was a very creative teacher and was loved by her students. She taught in Selma and in Dallas and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Bettie married Robert Sykes on Dec. 2, 1967, in Garner. Survivors include her son, Paul (wife, Cari), of Ft. Worth, Texas; sister, Charlotte Watson (husband, Louis), of Georgetown, Texas; nephew, Sam Watson (wife, Kelly) and great-nieces, Kinsey and Riley Watson, all of Raleigh; and niece, Wendy Watson (husband, Charlie Stelle), of Rudolph, Ohio. She is also survived by numerous cousins and many friends who will miss her very much.

Bettie was very active in her church wherever she and Bob lived. She sang in the choir and taught children in Sunday school. She was also active in missions, holding many positions of leadership in Women’s Missionary Union in the Baptist churches where they were members.
