A 15-month-old boy, who was seriously injured in an incident reported Jan. 15 to Brunswick County sheriff’s deputies, has died.
The infant, whose injuries included head trauma and bleeding in his brain, died Saturday morning in Chapel Hill, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax.
The infant’s mother and her boyfriend have been charged in connection with the infant’s injuries.
Albert David Morgan, 35, has been charged with felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
The infant’s mother—33-year-old Angel Marie Ray—was charged with felony accessory after the fact of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after “consistently giving false information to authorities” in relation to her son’s injuries and her boyfriend, according to the arrest warrant.
“Potential new charges are pending an autopsy, which was scheduled for today,” Flax said.

“The incident occurred on Thursday when Ray, the mother of the infant victim, left the baby in the care of Morgan while she went to a doctor’s appointment,” Flax said. “Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where they determined that the baby’s injuries were consistent with abuse.”
According to an arrest warrant, the infant had multiple abrasions and contusions on his face, neck and body, as well as head trauma that resulted in bleeding in his brain. He was taken to the pediatric intensive care unit at North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, where he died from his injuries.
During a first appearance in Brunswick County District Court on Friday, District Judge Bill Fairley raised Ray’s bond to $750,000 secured. Fairley ordered Friday that Morgan’s bond remain at $1 million secured.
Correction: A previous version of this report incorrectly stated the infant’s age based on information provided by the sheriff’s office.
