Richard “Dick” Vaughn Carus, Sr., 80, 30-year contracting manager with US Steel Corp.

Richard “Dick” Vaughn Carus, Sr., of Wilmington, died Aug. 19, 2014, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was 80.

Dick was born March 8, 1934, in Saginaw, Mich. to Franklin Vaughn Carus and Orphelia Slock Carus. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in Nashville, Tenn. in 1952 and from Vanderbilt University in 1956, earning a Bachelor’s of Engineering degree in civil engineering. Dick retired in 1986 from American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel Corp. (currently USX Corp.) after 30 years of service. He was contracting manager.

He was a member of Christ the King (Presbyterian Church of America). He is a child of God, having recently been born into His family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Stratton Carus; his children, Richard V. Carus, Jr. (Karen) of Cumming, Ga., Katie C. Ryan (Todd Childers), of Wilmington and Franklin S. Carus (Katrina), of Brownfield, Maine; his grandchildren, Christina, Daniel, Callie Ryan, Chase and Samantha Carus, John Ryan, Jr. (Akiko), Thomas Ryan (Theresa), Megan R. Ramsey (Cory) and Kaely, Corban and Conner Edwards; four great-grandchildren; friend, John J. Ryan; his brother, Glenn A. Carus (Gene), of Potomac Falls, Va.; his aunt, Gene C. Krieghoff, of Oakhurst, Calif.; and nieces and nephews in Maryland and Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Claire S. Carus and a sister, Sallie C. Remus. We give thanks to God for His provision these past eight months, both directly and through family, church family, friends, neighbors and Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Friends are invited to join the family to celebrate Dick’s life at a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at Christ the King Church, 1380 North College Road, Wilmington, with Robert Hamilton officiating. A reception is to follow at the church.
