Margaret Jean King Ward, 74, enjoyed a bushel of oysters, yelling ‘bingo’

Margaret Jean King Ward died Aug. 20, 2014, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, surrounded by family and close friends. She was 74.

She is survived by daughters, Dawn Naughton, of the home and Lisa and Chuck Hartman, of Anderson, S.C.; son, Tim and wife, Sheila Ward; sisters, Charlene and husband, Rudy Leister and Marlene Ives; uncle, D. F. Weir, Jr and wife, Deborah; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a long standing member of Oleander United Methodist Church and was involved in the Mother Hubbard Cupboard project, choir and liaison for the prayer chain calling. She retired from Rose’s Department Store at Hanover Center after 17 years as a customer service manager. During Margaret’s younger years she was an accomplished basketball player at Topsail High School and a participant in the 1956 Miss Pender County Beauty Pageant.

She enjoyed yelling “bingo,” crabbing, gardening and arts and crafts. Some of her best days included a bushel of oysters from B. C. Costin, sharing them with friends and family, steamed over an open fire in the backyard.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Oleander United Methodist Church on Oleander Drive with the Rev. Jimmy R. Tatum officiating. Interment will be at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Dr. James McCabe deserves an enormous amount of gratitude for the personal attention and professionalism given to Margaret as well as the direct manner in which he presented her medical condition to the family and for this we will be forever grateful.
